Road closures
Through early July
- Minnehaha Ave. is closed to thru traffic in both directions between N. Mendota St. and Johnson Pkwy.
- Vehicles can travel north and south on side streets. Parking on Minnehaha Ave. is permitted overnight.
- Detours: E. 7th St. to Johnson Pkwy. or E. 7th St. to Mounds Blvd. to Conway St. to 3rd St. to Johnson Pkwy.

About this project
Hwy 5 St. Paul to Maplewood project map.
This year, we are making improvements to Hwy 5/Minnehaha Ave. in St. Paul, including road resurfacing, sidewalk repairs, pedestrian lighting, bus stop improvements and more. We completed similar work on Stillwater Rd. in Maplewood last year. You can learn more about this project by watching this brief presentation.
2024 construction timeline
- Phase one (spring through early July 2024): Crews will work between N. Mendota St. and Johnson Pkwy.
- Phase two (summer 2024): Crews will work between Johnson Pkwy. and White Bear Ave.
- Phase three (late summer/fall 2024): Crews will work between White Bear Ave. and McKnight Rd.
Additional work
Starting in 2025, we will replant 390 trees along the corridor. These trees will be better selected for the area and will include native species, salt and drought-tolerant species, and trees that are the right size for boulevards and nearby power poles.
In 2023, 246 trees were removed before construction because they were diseased, in poor health or would otherwise not survive construction.
